Limited Edition Helvetica Moleskine
2009_0404 All the way from Hong Kong and still protected by the bubble wrap - two red and two black limited edition Helvetica Moleskine journals. The initial challenge was to find someone who was willing to part with them. The second challenge was to work through the currency conversions from Hong Kong Dollars to U.S. Dollars.

  CA Fresh
2009_0330 Featured today on the Communication Arts site in the "Fresh" section.

  PCA&D
2009_0330 Visited the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster today to present to the school's AIGA student chapter. Handed out lots of freebies.

  Central PA ADDYs
2009_0320 Doing our part to keep some last bit of the Ad Club of Central PA alive. The notice that the organization had dissolved was delivered too late to determine alternatives of how to handle the annual ADDY Awards creative competition. Go Welsh acted as this year's collection site for entries and made sure that all pieces were gently packed and shipped to NYC for the District 2 members to handle the judging.

  Step 100
2009_0316 STEP Inside Design's "Step 100" selections of the best graphic design projects from 2008 include work from Go Welsh. We've been fortunate to have had work included in several issues of STEP and are sorry to hear that this year's Step 100 issue will be the last one published.

    HELLO, PANTONE!
2009_0303 We just acquired a large collection of vintage cut-and-paste Pantone sheets. Solids, gradients, adhesive-backed, coated, uncoated - you name it, it's probably in one of the several thousand sheets that arrived today. Case upon case of oversized folders holding references of a pre-digital age of design. The majority of what we've been through so far look to be copyrighted in the 1960s.

The task now begins to properly catalog and inventory the collection. Internship, anyone?

  Hershey High School
2009_0226 After a call from Hershey High School teacher Steve Koons, Craig visited his alma mater to talk with a group of very gifted art students.

  Communication Arts
2009_0225 We hit the road and headed to Baltimore for an AIGA Baltimore presentation by Patrick Coyne from Communication Arts magazine. Coyne is the editor and designer of the industry's most noteworthy publication - a family business that began in 1959 and was nurtured along by Coyne's parents. We were also fortunate to meet Ed Gold, a key figure in Baltimore's creative community who had been a key member of Barton Gillet's run as one of the best studios in Baltimore. Ed also has ties to CA as a judge for the 1986 Design Annual.

  Music Superheros
2009_0209 The deadline is fast approaching to submit original music tracks for consideration for the Music For Everyone Volume 02 benefit CD. This year's campaign is based on music superheros "Clang" and "Boom" who Rrrrrummmmble their way through the streets of Lancaster, PA. A guerrilla advertising effort helped launch the initiative with die-cut superhero masks doubling as the call for entries. The campaign also includes posters that were distributed to area bars and restaurants.

  Haring
2009_0206 A Keith Haring print just arrived at the studio. It's from an edition of 99 that was silkscreened in 1989, just a year before Haring's death. It's titled "Kutztown" in honor of Haring's boyhood home of Kutztown, Pennsylvania and features a farmer and his wife with a hex sign overhead. More about the art of Keith Haring can be found at the Haring Foundation.

    Who's There? Jen Bilik.
2009_0129 Our entire team attended an event at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design when Jen Bilik, founder of Knock Knock, presented on Thursday, January 29th.

We also took advantage of Craig's friendship with Jen and had her stop by our studio for a visit before the presentation. She was extremely gracious as we asked her countless questions about how she got started, what her days are like, and if she still gets excited about seeing her products in stores.

To give Jen a true taste of Lancaster County we presented her with an assortment of Pennsylvania Dutch favorites like Apple Butter, Chow Chow, Pickled Beets, Shoo-Fly Pie and Whoopie Pies for the trip back to California.

  AIGA 365/29
2009_0123 Work on exhibit at AIGA's National Design Center. "Title 01 - The Thanks Issue," was one of 155 projects selected from more than 4,700 entries for inclusion in "365: AIGA Annual Design Competitions 29." The project will now also join the permanent collection of the AIGA Design Archives at the Denver Art Museum. Juried by a group of noteworthy industry professionals including Sean Adams of AdamsMorioka and Paula Scher of Pentagram, selected projects will travel across the country to AIGA chapters and student groups through 2009.

    Tours: W+K and Pentagram
2009_0123 Hopped the train in Lancaster and took the Keystone line to Penn Station in the heart of Manhattan. A quick ride on the 1 Train and we arrived downtown and were on the elevator to meet up with friends Lu Chekowsky and Bekah Sirrine of Wieden + Kennedy, arguably the world's most creative advertising agency. Lu and Bekah were recently promoted to associate creative directors after landing the Noxema account and both have worked on Nike's Jordan brand [Look Me In The Eyes]. We're going to bring them to Central PA at some point to present their work. Thanks to Lu for showing us the space - and some top secret stuff that has yet to hit the streets.

We then hit the R Train and landed in the Flatiron District where we ultimately ended the day with a tour of Pentagram, arguably the world's best design studio. Craig met Pentagram partner and DesignObserver co-founder Michael Bierut at AIGA's Harvard Business School program a few years ago and we were fortunate to have Michael as our host. We learned the history of the building (originally built as a bank - two vaults still exist in the basement), found out that the studio has a chef who prepares three meals each week for all staff members, and got to see every nook of workspace. After an inspiring hour of Q&A, Michael was extremely kind and gave several Pentagram books to each of us - and even went as far as having the five partners in the studio that day sign one of the copies.

  ADDY Judging
2009_0118 Craig Welsh was honored when asked to judge the Northeast Pennsylvania ADDY Awards at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Who wouldn't welcome the opportunity to visit the proclaimed stomping grounds of Dunder Mifflin, the paper company portrayed on NBC's hit show, "The Office?"

The ADDY Awards are the American Advertising Federation's (AAF) annual competition to recognize the best advertising creative in the United States. The ADDYs are the world's largest advertising competition with more than 60,000 entries each year.

    Typographic Puzzle
2009_0116 "Title 02 - The Giving Issue" includes a typographic puzzle that was influenced by an AIGA exhibit that featured the work of Norman Ives. The last spread of Title 02 includes a series of 192 numbered triangular elements on the left page that reveal a hidden message when cut apart and assembled in the grid on the right page. Congratulations to Gunnar Wray for winning the 4GB iPod Nano - the first person to e-mail us after a month had passed from the date the first copies were shipped.

Go Welsh staff reveal the Before/After.

Drop a line to info@gowelsh.com with your mailing address and we'll be happy to send you a copy of Title 02. It's filled with loads of wrapping paper patterns based on past Go Welsh logo projects.
